Vietnam focuses on seafood export trade to boost domestic market
Nguyen Hoai Nam, deputy secretary general of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), said that promoting export trade is a top priority for boosting the domestic market, Vietnam News reported.
Nam said this at a working session organised by Vietnam's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. The main topics of discussions include technical barriers, support for promoting export markets, and attracting green investment.
The session saw the participation of 12 agricultural counsellors from various countries and national groups.
VASEP has made significant efforts to increase trade with international businesses by enhancing cooperation and trade connections.
Nam noted that Vietnam, particularly the seafood industry, has worked hard to build quality management teams to meet market requirements. Vietnamese export products are now present in more than 160 countries and territories worldwide, including the EU and the US.
Nam pointed out that many markets are concerned about controlling antibiotic use in aquaculture. Vietnam's seafood business community is seeking technical support from other countries in addition to meeting partner requirements.
Nam mentioned that Vietnam imports a significant amount of tuna from New Zealand and has made efforts to comply with New Zealand's new requirements. Nonetheless, a separate agreement between New Zealand and the EU on food safety has caused issues with Health Certificates for Vietnamese seafood businesses. Therefore, additional support from New Zealand is needed to address these regulatory challenges.
Regarding the issue of removing the IUU "yellow card," Nam stated that the government, ministries, and business community have made substantial efforts and look forward to the EU's recognition.
Nguyen Do Anh Tuan, Director of the Department of International Cooperation under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, reported that Vietnam's agricultural industry recorded export turnover of more than US$53 million in 2023. Vietnam is a major exporter of agricultural, forestry, and fishery products with steady growth. With export scale doubling over the past decade, Vietnam plans to promote agricultural exports in many markets worldwide.
