Turkey sees increase in poultry and dairy production in March 2024
The output of poultry, milk, and milk products in Turkey saw an increase in March compared to the same month last year, according to data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), Hurriyet Daily News reported.
Chicken production rose by 2.7% year-on-year, reaching 205,000 tonnes.
In response to rising prices, Turkey's Trade Ministry imposed temporary curbs on chicken meat exports last month. The new regulation, effective from May 1, 2024, restricts chicken meat exports to a maximum of 10,000 tonnes monthly and 80,000 tonnes in total by the end of the year.
The ministry noted that from January to March 2024, chicken prices increased at a rate exceeding headline inflation and costs such as feed and energy. During this period, nearly 610,000 tonnes of chicken were produced, marking a 7.5% rise from the same period last year. About 333 million chickens were slaughtered in the first three months of 2024, up 7.3% year-on-year.
The amount of cow's milk collected by dairy enterprises increased by 7.7% in March, reaching 982,322 tonnes. Drinking milk output saw a slight rise of 0.8%, totalling 140,000 tonnes, according to TUIK.
Yogurt production amounted to around 104,000 tonnes, rising nearly 11% from a year ago. Additionally, the production of cheese made from cow's milk increased by 5.3%, reaching 70,000 tonnes.
