European Commission approves schemes supporting pig farmers in Slovenia and Latvia

The European Commission has approved schemes for Slovenia and Latvia to support pig farmers affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The schemes were approved under the State Aid Temporary Framework.

Slovenia will receive €3.6 million (US$4.4 milliion) under the scheme to offer direct grants of up to €225,000 (US$272,952) per beneficiary until June 30 to compensate pig farmers for their loss of income caused by the pandemic.

Latvia will be granted €13 million (US$15.8 million) under the scheme to provide support in the form of direct grants not exceeding €225,000 (US$272,961) per beneficiary, partially covering losses caused by the decrease in demand of pork and live animals and the subsequent oversaturation of the market.

The scheme will also offer support for uncovered fixed costs, not exceeding €10 million (US$12.1 million) per beneficiary.

Support will be granted no later than December 31.
