Meat & Livestock Australia seeks to appoint two new directors

Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) has commenced a selection process to appoint two new directors to its board by the end of the year, Beef Central reported.

The MLA board selection committee will nominate two candidates for the vacant seats. The stakeholders will then have the opportunity to endorse or reject the candidates during the annual general meeting scheduled for November.

The MLA board consists of eight non-executive directors along with managing director Jason Strong. As part of the selection process, the board selection committee is specifically seeking individuals with expertise in beef production and sheep meat production. Candidates should also have experience in modern production systems, pasture management, genetics, nutrition, and knowledge of research, development, and emerging technologies.

The tenure for MLA directors is typically three years. The previously elected directors in 2020, Russell Lethbridge from North Queensland and Andrew Michael from South Australia, may have the option to re-stand for another term if they meet the chosen skills base criteria established by the selection committee. It is worth noting that Chairman Alan Beckett's term will extend until the following year, as per MLA board provisions.

As a public company limited by guarantee, MLA boasts around 50,000 livestock producer members. The board's primary role is to provide strategic guidance and effective oversight of MLA's management and performance in delivering research, development, and extension strategies for the cattle, sheepmeat, and goatmeat industries.

Stringent corporate governance and risk management frameworks are in place to ensure the efficient investment of producer levies, government matching funds, and partner contributions for the sustained prosperity of the Australian red meat and livestock industry.

Nominations for the director positions will be accepted until June 11.
