Indonesia's President Jokowi urges nation to tap into global saline tilapia market

Indonesia should seize the significant global market potential for saline tilapia, said Indonesia's President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo.

The President said the global saline tilapia market will be worth US$14.4 billion in 2024.

He acknowledged that the country's efforts in developing a saline tilapia cultivation model were progressing well. With this model, the government can effectively monitor the production capacity of saline tilapia.

The President said Indonesia must capitalise on the promising demand, but they should not immediately scale up to a large operation. He said a model should be established first, underscoring the potential to increase production from 0.6 tonnes per hectare to 80 tonnes per hectare.

President Jokowi mentioned that developing these ponds, which span 78,000 hectares of former shrimp ponds, requires a budget of around IDR 13 trillion (US$809 million)

President Jokowi indicated that if the saline tilapia cultivation model yields positive results, the government will allocate funds in the 2025 State Budget to expand the tilapia ponds.

The President recently inaugurated the Saline Tilapia Cultivation Model managed by the country's Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries' Aquaculture Production Business Service Centre (BLUPPB) in Karawang Regency, West Java.
