In three days, the Chinook Salmon Symposium will be held in Sitka, Alaska. Chinook salmon is the largest species in the Pacific salmon genus Oncorhynchus. Hosted by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, this symposium is open to the public for free. In this gathering, you will learn about the status of Southeast Alaska Chinook salmon, research and management, the Pacific Salmon Treaty, and participation in the public process.

Chinook Salmon Symposium

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) invites the public to attend a Chinook Salmon Symposium, to be held at Harrigan Centennial Hall in Sitka, Alaska on Monday, May 21, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., local time. In this free symposium, you will learn about the status of Southeast Alaska Chinook salmon, research and management, the Pacific Salmon Treaty, and participation in the public process.

 

This event, hosted by the ADF&G, features:

 

  -- Chinook salmon research - about how local stocks are performing, as well as Pacific Northwest Chinook salmon stocks coastwide;

 

 

  -- Conservative actions - management measures in response to poor Chinook salmon production;

 

  -- Treaty transparency - a summary of the treaty past, present and future;

 

  -- Public process and participation - an overview of the public regulatory process and how to get involved; and

Saltwater fish cultivating started in Japan in 1927, in the quiet waters of the Seto Inland Sea. Full-scale fish cultivating of marine species started in the mid-1950s, utilising nets to make counterfeit "swimming pools for fish" in the sea. It was around then that aquaculture procedures became adequately modern to rear fish in pen.

 

Commercial aquaculture production in Japan has grown significantly since the end of the 2ndWorld War and today possesses a critical position in the fisheries sector. Yellowtail and sea bream - two favorites in Japan - are the most important fish farm products. Today, the main challenge producers are encountering is maintaining water quality in marine pens.

AquaVision

AquaVision is a world business conference on aquaculture, and this year's theme is "Meeting Tomorrow Today". The two-day programme will focus on two main topics: "The blue revolution" and "Beyond tomorrow". According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation, global food production needs to increase by 70% by 2050. The growth within aquaculture can contribute a significant portion of that future food supply.
