Malaysian state to export hybrid corn to US

Terengganu plans to export MYR3.3 million (US$932,300) worth of hybrid corn to the US, as the state will plant 10,000 acres of the crop in a number of districts.

Plantings will take place in phases and will be completed by 2015. The first phase will involve the planting of 2,000 acres in Hulu Terengganu, Marang and Kemaman, said State Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Committee chairman Rozi Mamat.

Following the signing of an agreement between Agrotech Development Corp Sdn Bhd (TADC) and Nelson Franchise (M) Sdn Bhd, Rozi said they hope to export 120 tonnes per consignment, four times a year.

The state government has allocated MYR1 million (US$282,500) to provide basic needs for the project, he said.

Hybrid corn has high demand in the global market and would fetch better income compared with traditional corn, Rozi said.
