Egypt quarantine 52,000 tonnes of Russian wheat

A 52,000-tonne shipment of Russian wheat has been seized by the Egyptian Government on health safety concerns, Egyptian traders said Wednesday (May 13).

The 52,000 tonnes of wheat being delivered to Egypt's state-owned General Authority for Supply Commodities, or GASC, was quarantined after being ordered by grain inspectors for a second fumigation after dead insects were found in it, said traders.

However, fumigation of imported wheat is not unusual, the traders said.

Authorities aren't allowing the wheat into the country and have sealed it off at state-owned silos until government officials are satisfied that no further action needs to be taken, said traders.

There have been no other Russian wheat seized, said the traders.
