Ukraine meat imports up in Q1
Meat imports to Ukraine increased five times in the first quarter of 2009 year-over-year, to over 25,000 tonnes.
Brazil and Poland accounted for the bulk of imports, according to the press centre of the Ukrainian Agrarian Confederation (UAC).
UAC expert Oleksandr Yaroslavsky said that a major reason for the growth of meat imports to Ukraine was a fall in the level of the protection of the domestic market upon Ukraine's accession to the World Trade Organization.
The high level of prices for Ukrainian-produced meat products and a falling domestic demand for meat obliges the processing industry work with relatively cheap meat imported to the country.
