More meat-alternatives produced by German companies last year

German companies produced 16.6% more plant-based meat-alternative products in 2023 compared to 2022 — as well as to production in 2019, with an increase of 113.8% — according to data from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis).

Around 121,600 tonnes of meat alternative products were produced in 2023, compared to 104,300 tonnes in 2022. The value of these products grew by 8.5% to €583.2 million in 2023 compared with the previous year (€537.4 million).

The number of producing companies in Germany is also rising steadily, from 51 in 2022 to 67 last year.

Despite the increase, the value of meat substitute products remains relatively low compared to meat products.

In 2023, the value of meat and derived meat products in Germany totaled €44.8 billion, almost 80 times the value of meat substitute products.
