Cargill and ASSIST collaborate to launch Green Aqua project for sustainable aquaculture in Mekong Delta, Vietnam
Cargill and the Asia Society for Social Improvement and Sustainable Transformation (ASSIST) have announced the Green Aqua project, a joint project which aims to combat water pollution by promoting sustainable aquaculture practices in the Mekong Delta region, Vietnam, Vietnam News Agency reported.
Set to run until July 2026, the project will commence its implementation in Ca Mau province. Its primary objective is to provide training for over 300 shrimp farmers on farming practices aligned with the standards set by the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) for responsible aquaculture. This includes training on livestock feed, waste management, and biodiversity preservation.
Out of the trainees, ten outstanding individuals will undergo intensive training, empowering them to pass on their acquired farming techniques to fellow farmers in subsequent periods. Additionally, a shrimp farming cooperative will have the opportunity to attain an ASC certificate, while three pilot farms will work towards reducing wastewater by 30% and decreasing nitrogen and phosphorus emissions by 20% by 2025.
Ca Mau, the southernmost province of Vietnam, stands as the largest shrimp production hub in the country, boasting a total farming area of 280,000 hectares. Over the course of two years, the project will focus on supporting shrimp farms and making a positive impact on the shrimp farming area throughout the province. Simultaneously, it will enhance the capacity of local farmers to adapt to climate change.
