FAO signs poultry industry development MoU with Egypt

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Poultry Farmers Union of Egypt have recently signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at developing the production and sustainability of the Egyptian poultry industry.

The deal provides for cooperation in areas of common interest through the transfer of advanced and innovative technological services, according to Egypt's Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation.

Systematic analysis and integrated methodologies will strengthen production in biotechnology and biosafety, with subsequent training and technical support for workers in the sector, according to an official statement.

The deal also provided for the exchange of information and technologies, such as vaccines or monitoring systems, and the control of diseases in the animal population.

Al-Qusayr, Minister of Agriculture, pointed out that the poultry industry employs three million people and over E£90 billion (US$5.8 billion) are invested in it.

The government prioritises poultry production as one of the fundamental pillars for the food security of Egyptians, the minister said.

Meanwhile, Nasser Din Haj Amin, FAO's representative in Cairo, noted that the first strategic goal of his organisation is to contribute to the eradication of hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition among the people.

In that regard, the signing of the MoU with the Egyptian Poultry Farmers Union is important as it will contribute to strengthening national capacities to withstand threats and crises, he stressed.
