Iraq buys over 542,000 tonnes local wheat

Iraq has purchased more than 542,000 tonnes of local wheat since the beginning of the harvest season last month, according to the state grain buyer on Saturday, reported Reuters.

The agriculture ministry has said it expects local production to reach six million tonnes in the April-May harvest season.

Iraq, a major Middle East grain importer, said in March that it would need to import one million tonnes of wheat this year to boost reserves amid growing concerns that measures to combat the new coronavirus pandemic globally would slow the food supply chain.
