Thai swine farmers to maintain pork prices at US$2.89 per kg
Suntraporn Singriwong, chairman of Thailand's Northern Pig Producers Association, said swine farmers around the country have agreed to maintain pork prices at THB 100 (~US$2.89; THB 10 = US$0.29) per kg to help consumers affected by the economy, Pattaya Mail reported.
Many Thai swine farmers have stopped raising hogs after an African swine fever outbreak in late-2021, which has impacted the pork supply chain in the country. There are only 80,000 swine farmers compared to 200,000 before the outbreak.
Soaring input costs are another issue for Thai swine farmers, due to Russia's invasion into Ukraine. Corn prices have reached THB 13 (~US$0.38) per kg.
Following the rising production costs, the Thai cabinet approved a Ministry of Commerce proposal to import up to 600,000 tonnes of corn without tariffs until July this year.
