dsm-firmenich and Meiji Holdings partner to boost sustainability in Japanese dairy farming

dsm-firmenich and Meiji Holdings have inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to bolster the sustainability of Japanese dairy farming by deploying dsm-firmenich's Bovaer product, FoodBev Media reported.

Bovaer, a cattle feed, has been scientifically validated to reduce livestock methane emissions, showing decreases of approximately 30% for dairy and 45% for beef feedlot cattle.

In 2021, Japan committed to the ‘Global Methane Pledge,' aiming for a 30% reduction in absolute methane emissions by 2030. With over 80% of methane emissions originating from the agricultural sector in Japan, the adoption of Bovaer becomes crucial in curbing emissions from over 1 million dairy cows and more than 3 million beef cattle, aligning with this ambitious target.

Mark van Nieuwland, VP of Bovaer at dsm-firmenich, expressed enthusiasm about expanding Bovaer's utilisation into Asia. He said they are excited to expand the use of Bovaer into Asia.

He is also looking forward to working with Meiji to explore how to implement Bovaer in the Japanese dairy sector and particularly in the Meiji supply chain, adding that preparation works will start now, while they await local market authorisation.

Bovaer is presently available commercially in 58 countries across Europe, the UK, Canada, Mexico, Australia, most of Latin America, and select other markets.
