Malaysia and Saudi Arabia hold talks on agriculture sector cooperation

Malaysia and Saudi Arabia engaged in bilateral discussions focused on the agriculture sector, research collaboration, and enhancing market access between the two nations, as announced by Malaysia's Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM), Bernama reported.

In a statement, KPKM revealed that Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu underscored the export potential of various Malaysian products to Saudi Arabia. These include tropical fruits, value-added animal products and feed, ready-to-eat items, eggs, and dairy products, as well as aquatic products like frozen catfish.

The initial meeting between Malaysian Minister Mohamad Sabu and Saudi Arabian Minister of Commerce Dr Majid Abdullah Al-Kassabi occurred during Dr Majid's courtesy visit to Mohamad's office.

During the meeting, Saudi Arabia shared the Saudi Vision 2030 innovation initiative, which could benefit Malaysia, particularly in the field of agriculture, and open new opportunities for cooperation between the two countries.

KPKM highlighted that the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI) expressed interest in sustaining its ongoing partnership with the National Research and Development Centre for Sustainable Agriculture (Estidamah).

Additionally, Mohamad extended an invitation to Saudi Arabia to participate in the 2024 Malaysian Agriculture, Horticulture, and Agrotourism Exhibition (MAHA), slated for September 11 to 22, according to KPKM.

Agricultural trade data for 2023 indicated Malaysian exports to Saudi Arabia amounted to MYR 2.64 billion (US$557 million).
