Vietnam's Q1 shrimp exports to Australia doubles

The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) said that in the first quarter of 2012, the country's shrimp exports to Australia hit US$20 million, doubling that of the same period last year.

As a result, Australia surpassed Canada to become the sixth biggest market for Vietnamese shrimp, the association said.

Vietnamese shrimp exports to Australia increased 21% to US$3.9 million in January but surged 173% in February and 114% in March, hitting US$9.8 million and US$8.4 million, respectively.

Processed shrimp products accounted for over 80% of total shrimp exports to Australia, said the VASEP, adding prawn shrimp accounted for 63% of shrimp shipped to the market.
