US beef exports third highest on record, pork exports improve
The US Meat Export Federation (USMEF) said the country's total beef exports in March were the third highest monthly beef exports on record, while pork exports were the largest in 2022 but lower than the record-large exports set in March last year, USMEF reported.
The US exported 126,300 tonnes of beef in March, 1% higher compared to March 2021. The value of beef exports increased 33% to a record high US$1.07 billion. Exports of beef in the first quarter of 2022 was 6% up compared to the same period last year.
Dan Halstrom, the chief executive officer of USMEF, said increasing inflation and reduced disposable income could result in lower exports for April and May.
US pork exports in March reached 222,600 tonnes, the highest since November 2021 but 25% lower compared to the record export volume in March 2021
The value of pork exports reached US$615.3 million, the largest since November 2021 but still 23% lower than the previous year. Pork exports in the first quarter were 20% lower compared to the same period in the previous year.
