Norwegian salmon exports up 21% year-on-year in April

Norway exported 81,498 tonnes of salmon in April 2023, valued at NOK 9.7 billion (~US$919 million; NOK 1 = US$0.095), up by NOK 1.7 billion (~US$161 million), or 21% year-on-year, Fish Information & Services reported.

The biggest markets for Norwegian salmon were Denmark, Poland, and France. Denmark had the highest value increase this month, with an increase in export value of NOK 440 million (~US$41 million), or 71%, over the same month last year.

The export volume to Denmark totaled 10,086 tonnes, up 49% from the same month last year.

Paul T Aandahl, seafood analyst with the Norwegian Seafood Council, said the largest transit market for Norwegian salmon is Denmark, adding that the fish is shipped to customers in Denmark before it goes on to other markets, primarily in the EU.

A quarter is destined for the German market. Other important markets for Norwegian salmon that pass through Denmark include Italy, the Netherlands, France, Spain, and Poland, he said.

He also said growth to Denmark offsets the decline in direct exports to these markets.

The export price for fresh whole salmon in April was NOK 113.60 (~US$10.76) per kg, which was NOK 3.98 (~US$0.38) per kg lower than the previous month's record. The price was 17% higher in comparison to the same month last year.

In April, Norway exported 2,739 tonnes of trout worth NOK 322 million (~US$30 million). When compared to April of last year, the export value increased by NOK 10 million (~US$947,000), or 3%. Export volume decreased by 21%.

The most important markets for trout for that month were the US, Thailand, and Ukraine. This month, Lithuania saw the greatest increase in value, with an increase in export value of NOK 18 million (~US$1.7 million) over the same month last year.

The export volume to Lithuania reached 219 tonnes, a 262% increase over the same month last year.

Fresh trout fillets cost NOK 152 (~US$14.40) per kg in April, NOK 4 more than the previous record month, March 2023.
