Japan confirms fourth classical swine fever outbreak of 2026 at Shizuoka pig farm

The latest case in Fujinomiya city triggers a cull of nearly 3,000 pigs as authorities work to contain the recurring disease pressure.

Japan has confirmed its fourth classical swine fever (CSF) outbreak of the year at a pig farm in Fujinomiya city, Shizuoka prefecture, with approximately 2,900 pigs set to be culled following a positive test result.

The outbreak came to light after the farm reported the deaths of around 50 piglets to a local livestock hygiene centre on Monday morning. Prefectural authorities conducted an initial genetic test, which returned a positive result, before the central government confirmed the infection on Tuesday.

This is the second confirmed CSF case in Fujinomiya city this year, following an earlier outbreak in March. Japan has now recorded four farm-level CSF outbreaks in 2026.
