US agri-food producers get $470-million additional support from government

The US Department of Agriculture on Monday, May 4, announced the details of its $470-million food purchase scheme that will provide additional support for agri-food producers and Americans in need, in response to changing market conditions caused by the COVID-19 national emergency.

US Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue said the purchases, using Section 32 funds designed to support agricultural markets, will occur in the third quarter of fiscal year 2020. These are in addition to purchases previously announced.

"President Trump has authorized USDA to support our farmers affected by this national emergency and this action to purchase food and deliver to those in need further demonstrates his unwavering support for the American people during these unprecedented times", Perdue said.

"America's farmers and ranchers have experienced a dislocated supply chain caused by the coronavirus. USDA is in the unique position to purchase these foods and deliver them to the hungry Americans who need it most".

The purchases include a wide variety of meat, dairy and seafood products, as well as fruits and vegetables.

As determined by industry requests, market analysis and food bank needs, the USDA will purchase $30 million worth of catfish products; $20 million of haddock, pollock and redfish (Atlantic); another $20 million of pollock (Alaska); $30 million of chicken; $120 million of dairy products; $30 million of pork; and $50 million of turkey products, among others.
