Triumph Foods moves forward to build new pork plant

US Triumph Foods is ready to move ahead with plans to build a pork-processing plant in East Moline.

The company bought 116 acres near Barstow Road in 2007, but had to put its plans on hold when the economy took a nosedive.

Triumph officials said the current hog market is improving as well as the company's ability to put together financing. They are asking the USDA to guarantee a loan on the US$150 million project.

The new plant is expected to process some 18,000 hogs per day and employ more than 2,000 people.

If the company can secure financing in time, construction will begin next spring.
