Sri Lanka launches credit programme to boost dairy industry

The Sri Lankan government has launched a programme to promote the agricultural industry by providing LKR 5 billion (US$46.3 million) at a concessionary rate of interest.

The programme will provide concessions for small-scale dairy producers, liquid milk processing industries and agricultural crop processors with the aim to boost domestic milk and milk products production.

The lack of a credit scheme for dairy products has been cited as one of the causes of static development of Sri Lankan milk production.

This credit programme would increase the investments in the domestic milk and food crop sectors. The government is also encouraging its producers to adopt modern scientific animal husbandry practises to optimise the provided financial assistant in an effort to improve their industry.
