Smithfield  may close 37 sow farms in Missouri, US, according to employee

Smithfield Foods could shut down 37 sow farms in Missouri, the United States, this week in response to hog market conditions, according to KTVO-TV.

The local television station had been receiving viewer messages regarding the closings. An employee told the station Smithfield's president announced that Smithfield is closing its sow farms in some northern counties, Putnam and Mercer.

Jim Monroe, Smithfield Foods' corporate affairs vice president said: "We are always taking steps to enhance our business for consistently strong performance through favorable and unfavorable market conditions."
