Australian beef exports up 17% year-on-year

Data from Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) showed that Australia's beef exports were 17% higher in April year-on-year at 72,604 tonnes, as the country's herd rebuilds following a prolonged drought, Irish Farmers Journal reported.

MLA data also showed lamb exports increased by 2% year-on-year to 22,222 tonnes, while mutton shipments jumped 48% to 15,772 tonnes.

Australia has had a notably robust market in China this year, largely due to the disruption of Brazilian beef exports to the country. In April, exports of beef to China from Australia amounted to 16,745 tonnes, which was a 42% increase from the same period last year.

Japan was Australia's second most significant market for beef at 15,225 tonnes in April, a 10% increase, followed by South Korea at 13,586 tonnes, which was a 27% increase. Additionally, sales to the US grew by 26% to 12,547 tonnes.
