Thailand to boost corn and wheat imports over livestock feed shortage
Thailand's cabinet has approved new measures to increase imports for up to 1.2 million tonnes of livestock feed ingredients, such as corn, wheat and barley, from May to July 2022 to ease a shortage of livestock feed in the country, Reuters reported.
Grain supplies have been affected by Russia's invasion into Ukraine, with feed mills in Thailand voicing concerns over a shortage of wheat and corn. They urged the government to relax import measures that were implemented to safeguard local farmers.
Under current laws, feed mills must source corn 3-1 in favour of local suppliers to obtain a quote to import wheat.
The new import measures were proposed by Thailand's Ministry of Commerce.
