Philippines' aquaculture sector seeks investments for modernisation

The Philippines' aquaculture industry is gradually embracing new technologies to enhance productivity and sustainability, but it requires additional investments to fully unlock its potential, The Manila Times reported.
Wilfredo Cruz, director of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Region 3 office, said that over the past two decades, the local aquaculture sector has adopted technologies such as cage culture, resulting in improved production.
Cruz highlighted the sector's shift towards modern production methods, focusing on sustainability. He noted advancements such as the reciprocating aquaculture system, which facilitates water reuse and controlled production environments, particularly for species like shrimp and tilapia.
Moreover, aquaculture operators are integrating aerators and sensors into their operations and transitioning from bamboo to high-density polyethylene for cage structures.
Despite progress, the sector faces challenges including limited fry supply, feed shortages, disease outbreaks, and climate change impacts.
To address fry scarcity, BFAR is advocating for the establishment of hatcheries nationwide, with plans already underway.
For feed shortages, Cruz emphasised the need for small-scale feed mills and local feed production R&D to lower costs.
In tackling disease outbreaks, BFAR is investing in R&D, detection methods, and training for aquaculture operators. Adapting to climate change, the sector is establishing resilient systems and utilising solar energy.
BFAR conducts technology demonstration programmes to assist fish farmers and aquaculture operators, fostering productivity amidst industry challenges.
Aquaculture is a significant job creator, with each cage requiring two employees, and over 2,000 aquaculture cages nationwide providing employment for around 5,000 individuals.
Chitanuwat called for the need for collaboration and investments to enhance the sector's competitiveness and facilitate exports of quality processed products.
Informa Markets is organising Livestock Philippines and Aquaculture Philippines trade shows from May 22-24 at the World Trade Centre in Pasay City, aimed at building the aquaculture community, fostering technology adoption, and linking producers with experts.
