Peru's fish exports at strong increase
 

 

Peruvian fish exports generated US$313.7 million for February, representing 52.6% more than in the same month of 2011, when the value was US$205.5 million, the Ministry of Production (Produce) revealed.

 

Moreover, export volume grew by 84%, from 113,800 tonnes in February 2011 to 209,500 tonnes in 2012.

 

This rise was mainly due to higher sales of fishery products for direct and indirect human consumption.

 

According to the latest Statistical Bulletin prepared by Produce, between January and February 2012 the sale of 460,600 tonnes of fish products abroad generated US$670.3 million while in the same period last year 187,100 tonnes had been exported for US$345 million.

 

Meanwhile, in February 2012, 146,900 tonnes of fishmeal were exported, 90% more than in the same month of 2011 (77,300 tonnes).

 

As to the value, in the second month of the year fishmeal was exported for US$175.6 million, that is to say, 57.7% more than in February 2011, when the figure had totalled US$111.3 million.

 

In the first two months of 2012, 319,900 tonnes of fishmeal were exported for 158% over the same period in 2011 (124,000 tonnes).

 

The main markets for Peruvian fishmeal were China, Germany, Japan, Vietnam and Turkey, which bought about 85.2% of total sales through February 2012.

 

February exports increased sales of fishmeal abroad in the first two months to US$382.1 million, a 116.6% increase over the same period of 2011 (US%176.4 million).

 

Meanwhile, last February crude oil exports totalled 19,200 tonnes for US$27.9 million, that is to say, 181.8% over the same month in 2011 (US$9.9 million).

 

During the first two months of 2012, a total of 71,300 tonnes of oil was sold abroad, 599% more than in the same period last year (10,200 tonnes).

 

Denmark, Chile, Belgium, Netherlands and Norway accounted for 83% of fish oil exports registered until February.

 

These sales generated US$92.4 million, an amount that represents a rise of 450% over the same period of 2011 (US$16.8 million).

 

Also in February 2012, about 33,000 tonnes of frozen products were exported, a volume accounting for a rise of 38.6% compared to 23,800 tonnes exported a year earlier.

 

In the first two months of 2012, 47,800 tonnes of frozen products were sold abroad, 25.8% more than in same period of 2011 (38,000 tonnes).
