India imports Canadian cattle semen for increased milk yield

To be able to improve cattle breeds in the state and ensure higher milk yield, the Punjab government has imported "high quality semen" from Canada, a minister said here Friday (Apr 27).

"Punjab has imported 1.5 lakh high quality semen doses from Canada to improve cow breeds. This will help create new milestones in the production of milk," Minister for Animal Husbandry and Diary Development Gulzar Singh Ranike said here.

To popularise the programme with farmers, the department is organising a seminar on this issue in Amritsar Monday (April 30), the minister said.

"The imported semen doses would help 75,000 cows produce dual breed offspring," Ranike said.

He said the high quality cattle produced through this technique would be able to deliver 7,000-8,000 litres milk per delivery.

Ranike said that the imported semen doses would also help in producing high quality bulls, which would further enable improvement in the breed of cows.
