Indian wheat production down by 50 percent
(UNI) Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar Sunday (Apr 30) announced that wheat would be imported if required to meet shortage in production to protect consumers and farmers.
Pawar acknowledged that wheat production has fallen drastically.
The government will be required to procure wheat from open market for providing it through Public Distribution System (PDS) due to diminished government stock.
Pointing out that protective measures has helped to ensure right price to farmers, he added that private companies had purchased their produce at more than support price.
An amendment in the Warehousing Act could be brought in the next parliament session to provide more benefit to farmers, he said.
