Ecuador grants Brazilian chicken, pork companies access to market
Ecuador permitted chicken exports from 10 companies in Brazil and 34 additional pork meat-packing houses effective immediately, the Brazilian Agriculture Ministry said in a press statement Thursday (Apr 27).
The decision is the result of an official Ecuadorian animal health inspection team that visited Brazil between Feb 6 and 24. The states where the meat packers are located include Goias, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Sao Paulo, Parana, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul.
Brazil's international agricultural trade negotiator, Odilson Ribeiro, said in the press statement that Ecuador's decision allows Brazilian chicken and pork companies greater access to that market. Brazil's meat industry's presence has been largely non-existent in Ecuador, judging by trade data provided by the Brazilian Commerce Ministry. Chicken and pork are not on the list of the top 100 items exported to Ecuador.
Brazil is the world's leading chicken exporter.
