Central Africa suspends pork imports on swine flu fears

The Central African nation of Gabon has suspended the importation of pork products from abroad, even though experts say the virus cannot be transmitted by eating meat.

Gabon Agriculture Mininster Paul Biyoghe Mba announced the official ban Tuesday (Apr 29).

No cases of swine flu have been reported in Africa.

The minister said the ban is preventive and acknowledged that consuming pork products does not currently pose any risk for contracting swine flu, adding that the country is also stepping up monitoring at its land borders and airports.
