Iowa's corn planting ahead of schedule

Just weeks after Iowa corn farmers finished harvesting leftover corn from last year's crop, many of them already have this year's corn planted.

"It just blows your mind," said farmer Andrew Lehman.

"95% of the corn is in around here right now, and some guys just got started with the beans last week," said Brad Essick of the Heartland Co-op Slater.

"I've got most of my corn in. I've got about 90 % of my corn in," said Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey.

"The thing you worry about when you plant too early is whether it's going to get too cold and whether the seed's going to come up," Northey said. "But not only was the ground in great shape, but we had warm temperatures."

Now that many farmers are already finished with corn, they can move on to planting beans. If the weather cooperates, that may only take a few weeks. "A long ways to go, but it's a great start," Northey said.
