Swine flu shouldn't hit Brazil long-term pork consumption

Brazilians may eat less pork owing to concerns about the swine flu outbreak, but this change will be short term, Sao Paulo's agriculture secretary told news service Estado in a live broadcast Tuesday (April 28).

"The consumption could be paralyzed in the first week (of the swine flu outbreak), but should normalize afterwards," Joao Sampaio said during the broadcast.

Sampaio added that Brazil is an exporter of pork and doesn't import pork from Mexico. Brazilians don't face a risk through eating cooked pork, he noted.

He said that Sao Paulo hasn't reviewed its animal health measures as a result of the outbreak of swine flu.
