EU may use banned animal protein to feed livestock

The European Union is reportedly considering to lift the veto on meat and bone meal for animal feed as a measure to ease the continual soaring of feed prices.

According to German weekly business magazine Wirtschafts Woche, farmers may initially use fishmeal in feed for calves and lambs.

Feeding livestock animal proteins has been prohibited since outbreaks of mad cow disease in 2001 led governments to take measures to prevent the spread of animal diseases.

In addition, the EU will propose letting farmers feed the remains of pigs to chickens before the end of this year, Wirtschafts Woche reported.
