UK organisations release video to encourage more use of "former foodstuffs" in animal feed

The United Kingdom's Agricultural Industries Confederation and UK Former Food Processors Association (UKFFPA) have created a short, animated video highlighting the environmental and nutritional benefits of recycling waste food as they sought to encourage more use of "former foodstuffs" in animal feed.

The animated video explains the role of the UKFFPA, and the work of its members taking former foods from UK food manufacturers to create animal feed products. It details the process of collecting those former foods and how they are transformed into livestock feed, saving over 650,000 tonnes of food that would otherwise go to waste.

David Moss, technical manager at AIC Services, said: "The UKFFPA and its members play a significant role in promoting the circular economy by reducing food waste and supporting a sustainable UK agri-food supply chain.

"Animal feed products produced by the UKFFPA members have recently acquired Global Feed Lifecycle Assessment Institute (GFLI) verified carbon footprint scoring, which further demonstrates the beneficial impact of using former foods within animal feed to help reduce a farm's environmental footprint.

"We hope that this animation helps to encourage greater use of former food in animal feed, which will contribute to reducing environmental pollution and our reliance on importing raw materials."
