Olymel shuts down hog slaughtering, deboning plant in Quebec, Canada

Olymel has announced the definitive closure of its hog slaughtering, cutting and deboning plant in Vallée-Jonction, the Beauce region of Quebec, Canada.

The decision was made due to company losses caused by factors including labor shortages, unstable export markets and increased costs. The facility will close gradually over a period of over eight months to accommodate producer demand. Nearly 1,000 workers were employed at the plant.

According to Olymel's management, the company's slaughter capacity has now been adjusted from 140,000 to 81,000 hogs per week which includes Olymel's three plants in Saint-Esprit (Lanaudière), Yamachiche (Mauricie) and Ange-Gardien (Montérégie-West).

The Canadian Pork Council stated that the closure will have a significant impact on Canadian pig production and that the entity will work with processors and partners to find solutions.
