Denmark reports fourth case of bird flu this year

The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration (DVFA) announced that 30,000 chickens will be culled after bird flu was detected at farm in Augustenborg, 188 km southwest of the capital city of Copenhagen, the fourth outbreak of the virus in the country this year, The Star reported.

The DVFA, working with the country's National Emergency Management Agency, plans to cull the entire flock in the coming days.

Signe Hvidt-Nielsen, DVFA's veterinary director, said the risk of bird flu has decreased, but the disease can still affect a herd, as the Augustenborg outbreak unfortunately showed.

The DVFA has established a restriction zone around the affected chicken flock in accordance with health regulations.

It is illegal to move eggs or poultry within a 10km radius without special permission from the DVFA, and all poultry owners within the zone are required to register their bird flocks.

According to the DVFA, this is the fourth outbreak of bird flu in Denmark since the beginning of 2023. Approximately 65,000 birds were culled as a result of the previous three outbreaks.
