Good rain forecast and cool weather to help Argentina's 2022/23 wheat crop
The Buenos Aires grains exchange said upcoming rains and cool weather during the austral autumn season in the country will help the 2022/23 wheat crop at key farm belt growing areas ahead of sowing that begins mid-May 2022, Reuters reported.
The exchange projected Argentina's wheat planting area at .5 million hectares (16 million acres) for the 2022/23 season, 200,000 hectares less than the past season which resulted in a record 21.8 million tonnes harvest.
The exchange said weather conditions are good for the growing areas at the eastern part of Buenos Aires province near the Atlantic coast and river spots, with expected rains and good availability of cold.
Buenos Aires province is the biggest farming area in the country and to the southeast is the major wheat growing area.
The Buenos Aires grains exchange also said the regions far from the Atlantic and the Parana River basin could experience drought, southwest of Buenos Aires.
Soybean and corn harvests for the 2021/22 season declined due to La Nina, which left little rainfall in the country's major farming area. Wheat was not affected as it was harvested earlier.
Argentina is a key worldwide wheat exporter. Wheat prices have soared due to Russia's invasion into Ukraine, which resulted in tight global supplies as both countries are major producers of the grain.
