Norway salmon prices soar to record highs

Statistics Norway said salmon prices in the country has soared to a new high of NOK 94.63 per kg, but the salmon industry said the real figure is higher than NOK 100 per kg and continues to rise, Fish Information & Services reported.

According to the salmon sector, prices for the fish are close to double the figure of this time last year, due to low supply in Norway and especially from Chile, the second biggest producer of Atlantic salmon.

Demand remains high especially in the US, even though it was expected to drop after Easter.

According to Statistics Norway, exports of fresh salmon declined from 17,628 tonnes to 12,041 tonnes, because of a a five-day closure of markets over the Easter weekend.

Frozen salmon prices also increased to NOK 81.14 per kg (~US$£7.04).
