Lower sow herds expected for major swine producers worldwide, according to USDA data


 

Most of the world's major swine producers are expected to see significant decreases in their sow herds in 2022, according to the latest estimates published by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) on April 8.

 

For the European Union, a reduction of 3.5% with respect to 2021 is expected, from 11.3 million heads to 10.9 million heads. Likewise, for the United States and Russia, inventories are projected to be 6.1 million heads and 3.5 million heads, respectively, representing decreases of 0.8% and 1.1%.

 

For Brazil, the leading swine-producing country in Latin America, its inventory is estimated at 2.98 million head with a decrease of 1% compared to 2021 (3.01 million heads).

 

However, China is projected to see 1.3% growth with respect to 2021, reaching 40 million heads. Mexico is expected to increase its inventory by 2.4% with 1.3 million heads, while Canada and South Korea are expected to grow by 0.3% and 2.2%, respectively, reaching 1.2 and 1 million heads.
