China clones first cow resistant to mad cow disease

A cloned calf with genes resistant to mad cow disease was born in East China's Shandong Province on Tuesday (25 Apr).

Genes were introduced to the calf cloned from cells of an adult cow using gene-transplant technology, according to scientists with the Laiyang Agro-Science Institute in Shandong.

However, the institute announced that further tests remains to be done on the 55 kg calf.

The research project was led by professors Dong Yajuan and Bo Xuejin, who cloned China's first and second cows in 2001.
