ASF detected in Mizoram, India

The Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department of Mizoram, India, has detected African swine fever (ASF) in Aizawl, Champhai, and Saitual districts, prompting authorities to initiate containment efforts, Northeast Today reported.

Official records indicated that a total of 174 swine have fallen victim to ASF, with an additional 68 swine culled as of April 22, 2024.

ASF was last detected in Mizoran in 2021. Swine farmers faced significant losses amounting to crores of rupees.

In response, the Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department has invoked Section 20 of The Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Disease in Animal Act 2009, designating affected villages and localities as infected areas.

Stringent measures have been implemented, including a ban on the export or import of swine from infected regions. Additionally, the sale or slaughter of both healthy and sick swine within these zones is strictly prohibited.

Deceased swine must undergo disposal by burial with lime powder, as mandated by authorities.

Dr M Zohmingthangi, deputy director of Disease Investigation and Epidemiology, emphasised the persistent threat posed by ASF, acknowledging the likelihood of continued outbreaks albeit varying in severity.
