Ukraine considers removing quotas for corn exports

According to the evaluation of supply and demand balances of grains completed by the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food, Ukraine has carry-over stocks of two million tonnes of corn till the end of the 2010/11 marketing year and this permits quotas to be removed in the near future.

This proposal was given to the government of Ukraine by the Ministry of Agrarian Policy.

The regime of quotas for exports of other grain varieties is planned to be cancelled after the completion of the spring field and sowing works after July 1, informed Nikolay Prysiazhnyuk, Head of the Ministry.

The minister also noted that the sowing area under corn increased to the level of 3.1 million ha and the general grain sowings rose up to 15.5 million ha in the current year.

At the same time, Prysiazhnyuk noted that the position of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy to protect the interests of domestic producers of agricultural commodities and support the food security of citizens of Ukraine remains unchanged and will be the key to joint efforts of the ministry and international associations of grain traders and their representatives.

The Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine reached the agreement with the American Chamber of Commerce and the European Business Association concerning the coordinated rules of grain trade on the international market, taking into account national interests and requirements in food security, added Prysiazhnyuk.
