UK develops new classification system for older cattle
A new live-weight system of grading older cattle will be introduced in most British livestock markets starting this week.
The new system, which has been developed by the English Beef and Lamb Executive, would enable markets to categorise older beef and dairy animals into four quality groups according to carcass conformation and fat cover.
This new system would give the industry and producers a clearer indication of prices for various quality grades instead of just one standardised price for all older cattle, said John Cross, EBLEX chairman.
EBLEX has worked closely with the Livestock Auctioneers' Association to ensure the system is easy to operate and understand.
Providing quality prices helps farmers with finishing decisions, encourages consistency in beef quality and helps overseas buyers make informed purchasing decisions, said Cross.
