India achieves breakthrough in golden trevally seed production

In a significant stride forward in mariculture development in India, the ICAR-CMFRI (Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute) in Kochi has successfully pioneered seed production technology for golden trevally (Gnathanodon speciosus), a prized marine fish species, Krishi Jagran reported.
This milestone is poised to carve out a new path for sustainable seafood production and broaden the spectrum of viable species suitable for mariculture. The attainment of successful bloodstock development, captive breeding, and larval rearing of the golden trevally comes after five years of dedicated research at ICAR-CMFRI's Visakhapatnam Regional Centre.
Renowned for its rapid growth rates, premium-quality meat, and robust market demand for both consumption and ornamental purposes, the golden trevally holds great potential as a marine aquaculture species. Locally, this fish fetches prices ranging from INR 400 (US$4.80) to INR 500 (US$6.00) per kg.
