BIOMIN's Digestarom DC gets positive opinion from European Food Safety Authority
On April 16, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP) published a favorable scientific opinion on the safety and efficacy of BIOMIN's Digestarom® DC for weaned piglets, BIOMIN announced.
"Based on the results of three efficacy studies in which positive benefits were seen, the additive has a potential to improve the growth performance of weaned piglets," the opinion stated.
"This marks an important milestone in the process of achieving EU authorisation of Digestarom® DC as a zootechnical feed additive," commented Dr. Antonia Tacconi, global product manager of phytogenics at BIOMIN. "We appreciate the scientific and rigorous work of the FEEDAP Panel in reaching its conclusions."
"Getting to this stage reflects considerable effort and expertise," noted Dr. Tacconi. "It's only possible thanks to decades of knowledge, scientific research conducted by R&D teams at the BIOMIN Research Center and the practical know-how of BIOMIN in the field of phytogenics in delivering effective solutions to livestock producers throughout the globe."
According to BIOMIN, supporting piglets to achieve high feed intake early on helps put them on the path to future performance success. "What sets Digestarom® DC apart is the performance benefits, pelleting stability, ease of handling and a documented mode of action," Dr. Tacconi said.
The triple-action formulation of Digestarom® DC incorporates the innovative Biomin® Duplex Capsule technology that ensures the plant-based active compounds are delivered where they are needed to be most effective. The three modules include promoting appetising and endogenous secretions; gut microbiota modulation; and gut protection.
BIOMIN first introduced Digestarom® DC at VIV Asia in March 2017. In May 2017, BIOMIN submitted an EU dossier for the product as a zootechnical feed additive in piglets.
A year later, the company submitted an EU dossier for Digestarom® DC as a zootechnical feed additive in broilers that is currently under review. The firm introduced the product to customers in Europe, the Middle East and Africa at EuroTier in November 2018.
"We look forward to the opportunity to further demonstrate the various ways in which phytogenic compounds and our extensive Digestarom® line can benefit feed and livestock producers based on their specific needs," Dr. Tacconi said.
