Market analysis

Shrimp prices saw an overall rise in March as export demand remains high. Specifically, the prices for giant tiger prawn for size 20 pcs, 30 pcs and 40 pcs per kilogram reached VND295,000 (US$13.02), VND345,000 (US$15.22) and VND295,000 (US$13.02) respectively. Prices for whiteleg shrimp reached VND148,000 (US$6.53) for size 100 pcs per kilogram, and VND160,000 (US$7.06) for size 80 pcs per kilogram.

In general, shrimp prices have been on the uptrend since the beginning of the year due to supply falling short of demand.

Farmers are focusing more on whiteleg shrimp production, causing a reduction in the farming area for giant tiger prawn.

The value of shrimp exports in March was estimated at US$207 million, meaning an estimated value for the first three months of the year of US$586 million, a 5.4% decrease year-on-year.

Market forecast

In the near future, shrimp exports to the Korean market is expected to face difficulty due to strict control of five diseases (WSD, Taura, YHD, IHHN and IMN) for frozen shrimp since April 1, 2017.
