South Korea's Q1 seafood exports hit record high
A robust overseas demand for seafood and poultry have helped South Korea's agricultural exports to hit a record high in the first quarter of 2008, said the government on Wednesday (April 23, 2008).
Farm products and seafood worth US$967 million were exported in the first quarter, up 21.1 percent on-year, according to the Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
This marks the largest amount of quarterly exports since South Korea began to record its farm and fisheries exports in 1994.
Last year, South Korea exported agriculture and seafood products at a value of US$3.7 billion.
Exports of mollusks increased 59.1 percent on-year, while poultry exports jumped 58 percent.
South Korea's exports to Russia increased 39.8 percent while exports to China rose 36.3 percent in the first quarter. Exports to Japan also went up by 17.7 percent.
