Brazil's pork industry in predicament over high feed costs

Despite good outlook on meat exports as well as expected growth of 6.5 percent in Brazilian feed sector, higher feed prices are set to upset the country's pork industry to expand in 2007.

Pork accounts for 27 percent of the meat segment in Brazil with sales growth forecast dropping to 5 percent as against 6 percent in 2006 due to higher feed prices, according to the sector's union Sindiracoes.

Sindiracoes said rising feed costs has also increased overall pig production costs by 10 percent and pig breeders have been selling animals for less than production cost.
